It is a dim, stormy night; rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals when it is checked by a violent gust of wind that rattles the trees above. A figure silently sits gazing at the raindrops which exploded with the slightest touch on the crispy, black leaves. The thick, grey clouds slowly split apart revealing the crescent moon which glares down at the brutal sea below. Crashing waves bash against the large, uneven rocks. Large pine trees stood up tall like the walls of a sturdy castle shading the dense forest. As gusts of wind flow past, subtle eerie noises can be heard from deeper within the abyss. gracefully the shadowy figure jolted up and disappear into their chamber. All of a sudden a beam of light shot through the crystal, clear window, fading into the pitch black.

Aggressive winds whiplash the tall, dark oaks squeezing the swift breeze through the leaves and the bony branches. Husshh, the dark oaks whisper. Voices of many can be heard throughout the echoing void. Swaying vigorously the vast grove shake uncontrollably as the breeze picked up the pace, the dense forest let out a bellowing shriek begging for it to stop. Razor, sharp grass dance with excitement as heavy torrents control its every movement. Filthy, muddy dirt covered by the boundless greenery stretches far and beyond throughout the vast terrain. The slippery, off-color mire, sludges and pops like the brew in a witches cauldron.

A blast of modern tunes erupts from within the residence. While the elegant figure dances with enthusiasm as vibrant colors explode out of the large, tinted windows. The alluring figure quickly reaches for a miniature, plastic toy which imitates a microphone and performs to sing in perfection. The benevolent, sweet harmony of the figure’s voice rapidly escapes the huge, wooden cabin into the far-reaching landscape. Cheerfully the figure leaps upon the soft, rugged sofa which was barely touching the massive window, and proceeds to howl at the bright, crescent moon, like an untamed wolf. Slowly the beautiful silhouette lowers their gaze to look out into the broad forest. Peering into the dense woodland, the figure tries to catch a glimpse of something out in the dead void. The curious figure keeps searching for something to happen, something to show up. Thick black fog materializes out of thin air, making it harder to see out into the deep, Thin, sharp branches stretched out high, intertwining into each other as if it was barbed wire. cutting out the ability to see further into the deep forest. The ghostly, hollow trees stare back at the pristine, wooden cabin. The spooky, slim trees intimidate the figure as they start tingling with dire discomfort.

Steadily scouting the dense, foggy woods the figure continues to peer into the pitch-black like a hungry hawk searching for its prey. Within a blink of an eye, their eyes locked onto something out in the deep, gloomy forest. She stares deep into my soul as I waver and slip behind a dark, bushy shrub. My heart, my adrenaline races to its highest peak. The frightening figure dashes towards a small, metal cylinder and twists it hard closing the clean, silky curtains. Barricading my dark pupils away from my prize. My uncontrollable obsession cannot be tamed. Insanity engraves my mind as I cannot live without it. They cannot see me here I must retreat.

Hi Ibrahim,

You have a lot of work to do in your final four hours of this assessment.

A few things you can think about are:

– Develop the details of your scene. Look at images that reflect the kind of setting you are aiming for and think about the things that are in those images.

– We talked the idea through of having a ‘predator’ lurking in the scene and then that becomes the perspective that you drop the reader into in that final paragraph.

– Make sure you are using a range of sentence structures for effect. Consider the role of short sentences for tension and suspense. Think about how long, complex sentences allow you to draw various elements of your scene together. Consider how each sentence flows into the next.

– You have some nice word choices so far. Be sure to use the figurative devices and grammatical approaches that we have discussed. You want to build that rich imagery so that your reader can really imagine themselves in the scene you are describing.

Make sure you leave yourself time to read through the work for accuracy. You want to check spelling. punctuation and grammar to ensure each sentence makes sense. Reading the piece out loud will help you to do this.
